Referring to Dr Banks

Information for general practitioners and specialists — referral pathways, subspecialty indications and urgent access.

Dr Banks accepts referrals for adult and paediatric ENT conditions, with subspecialty interest in rhinology, endoscopic skull base and orbital surgery, and paediatric ENT including cystic fibrosis sinus disease.

Private consultations are held at MY-ENT, 135–137 Macquarie Street, Sydney. Public patients may be referred through the outpatient services at Sydney Children's Hospital or Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick.

When to consider referral

Complex or revision sinus disease

Chronic rhinosinusitis unresponsive to medical therapy, nasal polyposis, frontal sinus disease, previous sinus surgery with persistent symptoms, or suspected complications of sinusitis.

Skull base, orbital and lacrimal conditions

Suspected CSF leak, pituitary and anterior skull base lesions requiring endoscopic access, orbital lesions suitable for endoscopic approach, and persistent epiphora for consideration of endoscopic DCR.

Paediatric ENT

The full range of childhood ENT conditions, and in particular paediatric sinus disease, sinus disease in cystic fibrosis, and paediatric skull base conditions via the Base of Skull Service at Sydney Children's Hospital.

Severe epistaxis

Recurrent or intractable nosebleeds for consideration of endoscopic management, including sphenopalatine artery ligation.

Public

  • Paediatric patients: refer via Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick outpatient referral pathways.
  • Adult patients: refer via Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick outpatient referral pathways.

Urgent cases

  • For urgent or time-critical cases during business hours, please telephone the MY-ENT rooms on +61 2 9247 1762 so the referral can be triaged directly.
  • After hours, or in an emergency, patients should attend their nearest emergency department.

What to include with a referral

  • Relevant history, examination findings and current medications
  • Any imaging already performed (CT sinuses / MRI), with access details or films
  • Previous ENT surgical history, including operation notes where available
  • For paediatric CF patients: CF team correspondence if available
